Funny you should mention long pockets.I was just thinking about some north face vertical long pockets I've had for years. Plastic or hypalon four ways on the top, velcro flap on the bottom.Climbing pockets meant for compression straps..Used them for years to hold snacks, rain gear, etc.Have some Lowe alpine vertical pockets as well.I can figure out a way to either attach them to the front of a base talon, or just use them as designed off the compression strap. Thats a better set up anyway, since I can dump them when not needed.

I also would also only be using mine on a frame when day hunting with the lid, never as a stand-alone pack. Drop the main bag leave talon and lid on an hunt. I wouldn't necessarily need the hydration pouch but would like some pockets for organization. The new day talon just looks bigger and bulkier than what I wold need and no pockets really. I don't want the pockets on the outside.

Does the base talon have loops in it to hang pouches from?

I used a first gen Day Talon as a compression panel this weekend, and my wife had a Base Talon. In my opinion the Base Talon is more functionally organizational than the Old DT. Here is why:

The old DT has opposing long zippers. You have to be on the left side of it to access one, then on the right side to access the other.

With the Base you simply unzip it and find what you want. The Old DT had too many pockets. It is actually a bit annoying to try and remember which pocket the headlamp is in (or whatever piece of gear). In the Base Talon small things settle to the bottom and larger things stay toward the top. With ziplocks or stuff sacks organization is really easy.

Lastly, I LOVE that the Base Talons single zipper is on the same side of the pack as the side zip to the main pack bag. It is super fast and easy to access both the pack bag and the Talon because of this.

I do want a hydration sleeve on the Base Talon though, and will likely have one made. I keep my windshirt and map in there most of the time.
