Ridge traverse from some S peak to mears peak with storms brewing. Essentially no fall terrain for 5 hrs. I did it with a very experienced mountaineer that has done peaks all over the world, including Logan , half the peaks in CO (not just 14ers). He thought it was one if his scariest times out

Scary Moments

Postby AK Troutbum » Thu Apr 10, 2014 3:11 pm

Me and my hunting buddy had two brown bears in camp one night on Kodiak Island. They harassed us until about 3 o'clock in the morning. We had an electric bear fence around our tent, but it wasn't big enough to go around the whole camp, and they ended up tearing the rest of the camp up. Fortunately for us they didn't come into our tent. That was, most definitely, the longest night of my life. They ended up coming back the next night, but we were prepared and had taped mini mag flashlights to the bottoms of our rifle barrels so we could see them through our scopes in the dark, and we ended up killing both of them. We had been flown into a remote part of the island and the weather had turned bad, and the bush pilot had no way of getting out to get us.

That sounds scary !!! I've had a few others all while on mountains not really any while hunting. Colorado lighting storms when you are way above tree line turn a mountain hiker into a mountain runner in a hurry

This is more funny than scary, but I once walked under a tree full of roosted turkeys very early in the morning. They bailed out with no warning as I was sneaking along by headlamp.

When 20 turkeys bail out overhead it sounds like 20 helicopters. Scared the crap out of me, even though I knew what it was.

I've had several scary moments, but for me there is something about "sustained" scary over hours, such as AKtroutbum, vs over a brief period , like a few minutes or an hour. There is something about the cumulative effect, and once your cackles are up it is hard to relax. Crossing the mountains in the spring a few years ago, a friend and I came over a saddle, and every descent was an avy chute, with perfect wet slab conditions set up. We finally said, well we are wet and our choice is to camp exposed up here 1000 feet above tree line and wait for better snow in the morning, or tread very carefully, be prepared and hope for the best. We did the later, but it was a scary 45 minutes or so.

I got admit we were pretty shaken up after that first night, and when it finally got light outside, it was a huge relief. I am actually even a little embarrassed to say, that I think I may have suffered a little PTSD, because for a while afterwards, whenever I would retell the story, I would find myself getting a little worked up, like I was reliving it all over again.

without any doubt nothing scares me more than traversing a boulder slope. You know a slope full of loosse pebbles and boulders with no firm ground beneath your feet. When traversing such slopes I'm contsantly ready to arrest my self when things starting to slide.

Just had the biggest scare for me a few weekends ago. Went up to Convict lake by Mammoth, Ca. for camping and some hiking. We hiked up from Convict to another lake that feeds Convict. It was about 2,000 ft and 6 miles to the next lake. We heard the bridge at a certain point was wiped out from a landslide but we didn't know it was the rest of the trail along with the bridge. Anyways we ended up crossing landslides with loose rock and snow slides with some pretty icy all along a pretty steep cliff. Plus one climb around the face of a rock. It ended up being all worth it but was pretty scary while we were in it. I dont plan on putting myself in that situation ever again.
