Backpack Discussion

Unaweep

Postby ernda » Tue Mar 11, 2014 12:27 pm

Ok, the unaweep looks interesting for those of us who probably wouldn't change packpags or carry our dead deer whole :>). Exchangeable talons and top pocket compatibility are great. Questions: Does the "load sling" allow stowing a z rest there? Also, the bag is permanently attached to the frame, correct? If so, is there any hydration bladder compatibility, especially outside the packbag? Finally, how durable is the red vx07 material? Thanks. I need to make a decision soon.

Yes you can strap a z rest. No external hydration comparability except in mesh talon. Internal yes , but not a perfect solution. VX07 is good for most things like brush and normal usage, not for butt scooting talus field descents. I prefer upright talus descents myself :)

The unaweep seems really nice and simple. The issue with the water bladder is the only hangup. Inside the bag won't really work in a roll top design without tube exit ports that add complexity and decrease weatherproof ness. Perhaps adding the connection tabs ( that allow attachment of the accessory bag that holds the bladder) to the bag front, so that the bladder can be compressed under the talon, may be an acceptable solution. It would leave the talon free for stowing other things.

I agree. It could be added under the Talon and compressed, or compressed where the over the top straps are, however there I think you would want a more robust case, due to sticks / abrasion etc.

What size bladder ?

I use a 3 liter bladder. I like the Source Hydration ones because they keep a flatter profile when full (no "barreling"). If compressed under a talon that itself contains gear I think the bladder would be protected enough, short of belly-crawling through chapparel.

Actually, thinking about it, a day talon on a unaweep may allow holding a bladder in the day talons bladder/strap stowage pouch while attached to the unaweep.. Question is whether the pouch can hold both the shoulder straps and a 3 liter bladder.

Ernda, the Day Talon stow pocket will hold the harness plus a 3L bladder. I've done that many times.

I don't know if packing a full bladder in the Talon sounds smart. Ideally you pack the heavy weight stuff as close to your back as possible and lest's say a bit high up between the shoulder blades. Putting weight out further from your back gives inbalance

Zuma, I agree with you to a point. For most packs the COG issue is extremely relevant. With our pack it still is, but the height of the frame allows it to still carry comfortably. Depth of the pack load is also a big factor in whether you notice COG issues. In general it works pretty well to carry a bladder in the talon, though it may not be ideal. The convenience of it is also really nice.

Zuma and Nathan both make good points. One thing that may push me toward the evolution frame and pack bag is my use of a bear canister on about ally trips. That increases the pack depth and could put the water bladder too far from my back.
