Switching pack bags on 2014 unaweep Frame to new bag?

Postby chinookhead » Fri May 12, 2017 5:45 pm

I just ordered a new pack bag for my unaweep and I have two questions because it appears that there were significant changes done to new unaweep since I purchased a unaweep in 2014. I have two questions.

1) As you see in the 1st picture, the old unaweep has what I think is a metal bar sewed into the bag under the red strip of fabric that you see in the picture. My new Unaweep bag does not have this bar in the bag. The new pack bag that I ordered does not have this bar sewed into the bag. Can I use the bag without a bar somehow inserted into the pack bag or do the unaweeps now have a cross stay inserted somewhere else like on the steel frame itself?

2) How do you attach the bottom of the frame to the pack bag? As you see in the 2nd picture, the old bag has two straps that i have my fingers on, which you tightened around the bottom of the frame. From the 3rd picture, you can see that these are no longer present. Did I attach it correctly by wrapping that triangle piece of fabric around the bottom of steel frame or am I supposed to insert it into one of the PALS webbing loops on the triangle piece of fabric?

Yes the rod is gone at the top and replaced with a lower cross stay. The cross stay provides better protection against barreling and better head movement. It is however removable as well. If you didn't get one contact us via email. The feature is optional and it is fine without the bar at the top.

Yes the bottom connection is different . You have it right , don't be afraid to crank it down. This new hold down does a few things first it provides harness tension directly to the bottom of the frame , secondly it allows the belt to be captured and ran with a forthcoming but optional lumbar pad .

Thanks

Thanks for the clarification......very helpful. I have one more question. If I'm not going to be attaching a lumbar pad, are you still supposed to put the hip belt behind the bottom triangle hold down?

No then attach triangle behind the hip belt and let the belt float . You can actually still attach a pad this way as well but the belt floats

I just received the cross stay. Can someone describe where and how you install the cross stay? Also, if someone has a picture of where the cross stay is on your bag, it would be be very helpful if you could post that picture here.

Not sure if I have a photo handy but generally about 16 inches from bottom of frame where the width of the frame is the same as the stay. Slide it between frame and pack bag wrap the Velcro around the frame

You can see how the Horizon stay is configured here on the main photo.
