Great pics 'theoutsidemud', looks like a great time too.

Here are a few recent pics. The 6-man and SXL stove. Also the Helinox ground chair. The low chair is a good fit in the tipi.

Fatwood makes great kindling

Chilly 15-30 mph winds, you wouldn't even know it in the tipi. Very quiet.

Glassing from the comfort of the tipi. and Helinox chair

A nice buck, bedded.

Montanamarine - Jeff; is that you?

I'm assuming it most likely is...

Sorry; excuse the thread hijack I can't private message you as I've just joined the forum. Under your pseudo name this is your most recent post. Wanting to pick your brain over your 30-06 load development. I have read many of your posts while trawling through forums like these. I've been building my rifle and self teaching
Myself to reload and you have always stood out in the forums as the authority in 30-06 data and reloading. If you have time if like to pick your brain; obviously not here on this tipi gear review.

As to who I am; I am the little brother of this guy www.mountainman.co.nz

Hope to speak soon.

Regards

Barrack

Barrack, My name is Shane Pitzer. I have posted under the name "MontanaMarine" on a few gun related forums for the last 15 years or so. Mostly on 24 Hr Campfire and Sniper's Hide.

I have been shooting the 30-06 in a heavy long range rifle, and posted a fair amount about that over the years.

Sorry shane, not sure why I had written Jeff... Must be the baby brain; dealing with a new addition in family. I'm currently using a long range 30-06 (howa 1500 with a 1:10 kreiger 4.5 contour at 26") and want it designated as an alpine tops gun for New Zealand South Island. Specifically Im wanting to put together a rl 17 load pushing the 208eld at 600+ yards for long range deer, chamois and thar shooting. Am wondering if you have a similar load? I've put together a ladder from 49gr-55gr and want go get an idea if I need to go any higher or is 55gr moving into excessive pressure territory? I'm about to have a terminator t2 brake fitted so wont run test until rifle is back from Gregs in Nelson. What other loads have you worked with / found very good for long range in then 30-06? Am I on the righ track with the rl17 or should I be moving over to the rl 19 and rl 22?

Baz NZ,

I'm using RL-17 in the 30-06, and for bullets, the 208 Amax, and 215 Berger.

I've found excellent accuracy at 54.0 gr. 2650 fps from a 20" sporter, and 2700 fps from a 22.5" heavy barrel. The heavy rifle keeps them well under 1 moa, typically .5 moa.

I'm a long range shooter, but not really a long range hunter. I like to know what my abilities are though.

My heavy 30-06 was 26" originally. I was loading 60 gr RL22 under the 208 Amax for 2800 fps. Fun rock-shooting load way past 1000 yards. I've had success at a mile in fairly calm and dry conditions. Eventually I cut to 22.5" and braked it. At about the same time I consolidated on RL-17 powder for both my 308 and 30-06 loading. So my current 30-06 load is 54.0 gr RL17 under a 208 Amax, or 215 Berger. Getting about 2700 fps in summer, 2650 or so in cooler temps.

So, I ve given up about 150 fps. But given the high BC's of the bullets, they still shoot very well to 1000+ yards.

For 600 yards, you would have a VERY solid load.

Always start low and work up with normal cautions. I'm using Norma and Winchester brass, CCI 200 primers, and moly tumbling my bullets.

A couple pics of the light and heavy 30-06s

Here's a (poor quality) video I made a while back. Shooting the heavy 30-06 at a rock about 6" diameter, at 1198 yards. This was the 215 Berger over 54 gr RL-17.

Shane, where can I contact you privately? FB( link you shared)? Just run some loads on my rig over weekend, have funny feeling your running quickload... Looking to venture over 55gr to as high as 57gr rl17 w/208gr, no pressure signs as of yet. Getting 2850 with 55gr. But am sure I'm surpassing 60,000psi. Also can you describe process of mollied projectiles...

Interested to get some technical input.

Baz NZ,

I'm not using QuickLOAD for the last couple years. My old computer crashed and my new computer isn't compatible. I need to get the update disc but have just been putting it off.

If I rememeber correctly, I did do a ladder with RL-17 and the 208 going up to visible pressure. I probably posted it on the old Sniper's Hide several years ago. I'll see if I can find a link.

My moly process is simple. Add 100 or 200 bullets in a vibratory tumbler with no other media. Add about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of moly powder. Tumble for about an hour or so. That's it. I have a dedicated bowl for the moly tumbling because it will get messy. You can also put the bullets/moly in a big plastic vitamin bottle, tape it with duct tape, and put that in your tumbler if you want to keep your tumbler bowl clean.

You can private message me at FB or here if you want. I'm also a regular at the 24 Hr Campfire forum. Either is fine.

Congrat's on the 6-man!

I found it to be a very real increase in size up from the 4, without much more weight.
