Base camp 12 man versus 16

Postby Kthomasm » Sat Dec 10, 2016 6:40 am

New to forum and SO. Impatiently and excitedly waiting on my Red cliff package!

Question is I ordered the Red cliff for backpacking and spike camping. Looking at the possibilities of a 12 or 16 man for basecamp rather than a wall tent for ease of set up and weight.

1.I get the head room, space and probably heat holding benefit of a wall tent over tipi, is it practical to base the entire hunt out of a 12 or 16 man and a cook tent?

2. How many army style cots will each realistically handle with a stove and a moderate amount of gear? Our base group is 4 but may range to 6 and I got 2 more growing elkoholics that are nearing time to come with dad.

3. I assume if I plan on running a stove 10-12 hours a day for late season the titaniums will probably have to give way to a steel heavier guage stove? Insights? Looking not to struggle keeping a 60ish degree temp without parking someone in front of the stove continuously.

Thanks for help ahead of time!

It is practical . Not sure on army style cot but a standard 25 by 12 high cot you can go 4 plus stove in a 12 and more in the 16. Personally I'd go 16 man and stainless XXL stove . You can run pretty much standard wood you buy at a convenience store in the XXL

The 12-man will fit four of the military cots around the perimeter, with room to use both doors.

For more than four on cots, you will want the space of the 16 man.

The wife and I put two cots on one side of the 12, and the other side for table, firewood, dog's bed, But the other side could easily fit two more cots instead. The taller cots give good storage room underneath too.

A few pics of the 12.

Thanks for the replys guys!

Montana, that set up is nice! I daresay I like that layout better than what we get with 4 guys/cots in the wall tent. It is one parallel to stove and 3 cots parallel with heads nearest stove. Problem with that is we end up falling all over each other or having to take turns getting dressed cuz u only got space for 2 guys between cots at a time. Also like the idea of the heat being central to all. In the wall tent the guy nearest is in his underwear and the rest if us are bundled up like we are in the arctic. That looks nice and roomy and it doesn't even look like u have the guy outs used.

I am in the exact same position. I have three kids and wife. Right now Im using a Cabelas Bighorn and FourDog stove when car camping. It is a great setup, but very heavy and labor intensive for me to set up alone. So I'm looking for a replacement for my car camping setup, but want something I can also use when I go hunting with my boys and 3 buddy.

Im just not sure the 12 man will hold me and my two boys, plus 2-3 of my buddys all sleeping on ultralite pads / cots with the stove and gear. So I've been leaning towards the 16man, which I know will work. But the 16 is going to be freaking enormous if I go out with just my two boys. So is the extra weight ill have to hump around when going out with them worth the functionality it will give me? Im not sure.

I watched this video, which has given me the best look Im going to get of a 16 person Tipi in action unless I fly from Pittsburgh to Colorado to see the in person. Any advice?

The smaller tipi is a 4-man.

She was the best little dog ever. Brought her home from the shelter near Bozeman. Such a good girl. A real little trooper who loved to go anywhere. She left this life about a year ago. Still tough to think about. Those dogs can really get into your heart.

Yes dogs can. Ive been fortunate and had a coupe real good ones . Lost one several years ago and it was tough. His running mate is showing sign of age as well and unfortunately he doesn't get to go in the mountains as much as he would like anymore .. but he does get walks around the neighborhood
