Redcliff & SXL Stove Flash Review

Postby Akicita » Tue Aug 02, 2016 8:53 pm

I mentioned in the SO Redcliff vs Sawtooth post that I would write a “Flash Review” when I had a chance to use them both so here it is.

Camp Site – North West Colorado 8450 ft.

Weather - Daytime temps averaged low 80’s - Nighttime temps averaged low 40’s with a low of 39 one hour before sunrise -

Redcliff Flash Review – I have no doubt in my mind that my decision to go with the Redcliff over the Sawtooth was absolutely the right decision for me. Over all construction is above expectation and quality of material is as good as I have seen from other manufactures. The foot print allows ample room for many varieties of sleeping layouts. Overall height is enough for my 6 foot stature however I think with a little more height the wall pitch angles would allow for better bedding layouts. Setup is intuitive and can be done in less than 5 minutes if needed. I have been averaging about 10 minutes at a leisurely pace with full guy lines and a few adjustments. The Redcliff has proven to shed wind and moderate rain easily although I have only experienced sustained winds in the low of 15 to 25 mph with gust to 30mph. I am relatively confident the design will shed common high country wind gust in the 50mph range but only time in those conditions will tell if material and construction will hold up too. Overall the Redcliff has my overwhelming endorsement for design, size, weight and ease of setup. I am finding myself packing this over my other tents without hesitation regardless if I am alone or not.

SXL Stove Flash Review – I love, love, love this stove! I have used every type of wood burning stove known to man to heat my home and tents over the last 5 decades and the SXL is at the top of my favorites list for tent stove. What I love about this stove is that it is purely and efficiently light and S-I-M-P-L-E! Simple design, simple assembly and light weight titanium should make this stove a no brainer decision for anyone regardless of what tent you select to use it in. I feel the SXL is just the right compromise between weight and size that makes it the best choice for me. Large enough to stoke with more than kindling for slow burns of over an hour between stokes. The intake and pipe damper are efficient enough that I was able to keep hot coals from a full stoke as long as 1 hour and 50 minutes before loading a new stoke. I have used a lot of titanium cylinder stoves that I would sell for scrap to buy this one. . . Again. . . An overwhelming endorsement for design, size, weight and ease of setup.

As I us the Redcliff and SXL more I will follow up with a full detailed review to include setup details and foul weather evaluations. Currently my work and leisure time will have me living in the Redcliff 14 to 21 days a month through mid-November. Please feel free to post questions and I will answer them when I can and “on grid”.

Awesome review and appreciate the pictures. Do you feel you could sleep 3 or 4 comfortably with a stove and gear?

Have you thought of or tried making some stake loop extensions to get the shelter up off the ground 3-4'' to created airflow and create a little more vertical room against the sidewalls and help with the condensation?
