SO Redcliff vs. Kifaru Sawtooth

Postby njc89 » Sun May 29, 2016 7:04 pm

Looking for a new tent for a late October backpack hunting trip in the high county and THINK I have it narrowed down to these two models. I have never seen either one in person though.

I'm looking for something to handle 2 hunters, rifles, packs, sleeping bags, etc. with a stove to keep us reasonably comfortable. The dimensions of both tents are similar, and seem very adequate. Prices difference is insignificant to me. Resistance to wind and a little snow would be most important. I don't want this to turn into a survival situation 8 miles from the truck in the dark. I will choose the SO titanium stove either way. Sod skirt, roof vent and double doors of the Redcliff seem like good features. On the other hand, the Sawtooth has a pretty loyal following with some success weathering strong winds. Any thoughts that would help me make up my mind would be greatly appreciated. And if you have a better idea, please let me know.

Thanks

Neal

Never spent a night in the other shelter . I know some that have used both and really really like the Redcliff. Redcliff handles wind and snow well IMO and access is much easier with the stove going . My guess is Redcliff feels larger but that is just a guess . I wouldn't hesitate using Redcliff for 3 hunters and 4 in a pinch

I think they r both being reviewed in EHJ ... Not sure when it will print or what conclusions are drawn

2 doors with the redcliff, one with Sawtooth, one center pole with redcliff vs 2 poles for the sawtooth...more room with redcliff if you look all the pictures.I own shelters from SO and Kifaru and they are all good and well made, only personal con i found with time is the stove jack location in the SO tipis. In my opinion go with the REDCLIFF.

Would the 2 pole setup of the Sawtooth lend any more stability, or is there more to think about in that equation? Thanks for the replies.

I'm am not versed in the ST but I would say it adds room but takes it away at the same time. We choose to approach things differently and the Redcliff is designed to use an external guy out to accomplish a similar function. You can stake the guy out , vector it with a trekking pole or stick . Just a different approach

I have spent the last several months researching and gathering as much information as I could about the SO 6 Man Tipi, Kifaru 6 Man Tipi, Kifaru Sawtooth and SO Redcliff. After several emails to staff at Kifaru I went to the Kifaru Headquarters to look at the Sawtooth they have pitched in their showroom. I was truly impressed with the design, material and craftsmanship however I did see som shortfalls for the purposes and use that I anticipate needing for my back country and high country activities. That made me look closer at the Tipi options of which I ruled out rather quickly for varied reasons. That brought me to the Redcliff. Several emails to Becca and a phone call today brought me to a conclusion and I placed an order for a Redcliff and SO SXL Titanium Stove. . . There are not many reviews or info on the Redcliff that I could find so I am placing my faith on what I have been able to learn about Seek Outside products along with my intuition from 50 plus years of back country and high country travel and survival. I look forward to receiving my Redcliff and I will be sure to share everything I learn about it in detail including pictures and video.

Stay tuned . . .

Very interesting post, I also have decades of intense wilderness/bush experience in BC, Alberta and a little in Canada's Yukon and NWT. I started hiking with a pack in 1956 and backpack camping in 1964 and worked alone for 3-5.5 month stints in many wilderness locations as above.

I bought a lot of KIfaru gear starting over a decade ago, had several major QC issues and the CS was NOT satisfactory. Others may have experiences that differ, this was mine.

I have bought one pack from SO, and after dozens of highend, "cutting edge" packs over more than a half century, this is THE most comfortable and brilliantly designed pack I have EVER used. The courtesy, honesty and general CS I have experienced from Kevin, Angie and Luke as well as Nathan, is THE BEST I have ever had and I would buy from SO FIRST, no question.

I might add here, I do not know or have ever met anyone connected with SO and my opinions derive from how they have treated me.
