Chicago screws

Postby ernda » Tue Mar 01, 2016 11:45 pm

Kevin mentioned at one time about attaching the hip belt with Chicago screws. I assume stainless steel Chicago screws but what length/size? Do these have the shear strength to be used as hip belt attachments?

I think you would want Aluminum Chicago Screws to be lighter. I have thought about trying some but haven't gone rummaging at the hardware store to figure out what size and length yet. I would think they would not be as strong, but should be plenty strong to 50-60lbs (just my guess). I probably wouldn't try and use them at 100lbs.

Thanks for the reply. Not to worry, I would be happy not to carry 100 lbs.
I'm thinking about this because of the annoying situation I had on a backpack where one nut and screw attaching my hipbelt worked loose and fell out and I could not find them. I had to field repair with twine which worked for the remainder of the trip but I'm now a little leery of the nuts and screws. Last summer switched to clevis pins and rings which work, maybe some grams heavier. I'm not worried about potential noise because I'm not a hunter. I thought I might try chicago screws and carry small zip ties as field-expedients repairs.

The zip ties might not be a bad idea, nor would a dab of lock tite on the Chigago screw threads.

Chicago screws

Zip ties will fail , cordage is better . Nylock is pretty good if tightened a bit , wing nuts can work loose of not secure

Zip tie knowledge was from last week assembling a secondary pack for a trip I didn't have one extra nut so I zipped tied to get out of the house and for travel . It failed the third or fourth time shouldered ( good reminder to get the nut I needed )

Thanks for the heads-up on zip ties.
Do you offhand know the size of the nylock nut and bolt? maybe I should carry and extra set instead.
