Unaweep Review after the PCT

From a weight savings standpoint I think there is very little low hanging fruit in the confines of the system. The belt can be lighter by 2-4 oz, the harness could be a bit lighter, you can lose a bit of webbing. But IMO you lose more capability than you gain in weight savings. There are much lighter packs out there, but what weights are they comfortable to?

You can strip some weight from the packs, but pretty soon you're cutting out stuff that make the packs work. Then you're left with an UL pack that is uncomfortable with more than 25 lbs and that suffers in the durability department. There are already a lot of packs in that space.

Nathan, I think you are right in a lot of ways, however my comment was made in the context that the frame, belt, and other suspension components were designed as a hunting pack with the ability to carry 100lb. Most backpackers rarely get above 50lbs, and myself carrying under 30lb most of the time. I wouldn't change the pack bag material to anything or the UL frame as it carries very well and is pretty minimalist as is. I was just saying that it looked to me that the belt could be made lighter for backpacking use.

My 3900 is supposed to be here on the 5th and I am going to do some trimming and see what I can get the weight down to. I will trim some of the suspension straps a bit but not stupid short like some people try.

I really do think there is a market for some hipbelt pockets though.

I snagged the front pouch and it made my hip belts be obsolete.

I think the gateway pouch isn't on the site any longer but I'm sure glad I got 2!!

I will be trimming my straps some to get the weight down a tad but want to get a few more trips in to make sure I don't regret cutting them.

"...change to Chicago screws for hip belt attachment."

I haven't made this change, but I did take the existing bolts out to see what they weighed at it was 5g each. I am not sure what Aluminum Chicago Screws weigh, but if I assume half as much, that would only save me 0.2oz and that might not be worth the trouble to track down the right size screws. It is a way to save weight without any loss of functionality however.

I haven't changed out the shock cord on the pockets either and I may or may not get that involved. I estimate that would only save 0.1-0.15oz.

This is 2 lb 12 ounces (2.75 lbs ) in alpine gray without any extras . Not as light as some other packs but carries super well . The Horizon stay adds 2.5 ounces but you can change it out to carbon rod and save most of that ... You just loose a little bit of air gap

I can see an alpine grey in my future!!

I tried a 1.5lb gossamer gear pack and no way the weigjt cut was worth the loss of comfort for me. I'll take a 3lb Seekoutside all day every day. The 1.5lb packs don't distribute the weight correctly for me like your belt does.

Ok, sounds good.
Do you see this as an accessories or a new hipbelt with integrated pockets? What timeframe to you think it´s available if it will come to production?

Accessory for the moment . We've chatted about it a lot but have not ever made it a priority
