Extensions or No Extensions

Postby mule » Thu Mar 20, 2014 1:52 am

I'd like to hear how all of you carry your packs in terms of 24 or 28 inch setup.
So far I have only gone on trips with it in the 24 inch mode, but except for getting under downed trees, I don't see why the 28 wouldn't be the right choice. I only carry a max of 45 pounds and usually only 35 to 40, but if I am using my zippered top lid the extensions would not be any higher than the bag and lid. What are your thoughts?

I use the extensions most of the time. I do have the frame lowered right now though so I can use it as carry on luggage on my way to BHA in Denver.

I've used them all. I prefer 26 for most
uses. I adjust the ride a bit for up or down if need be. I usually prefer a high ride

I have been thinking 26" may be perfect length for me too. I have put a few miles on mine with 50 lbs. with 24" and 28" lengths and actually prefer the 24"length for that amount of weight. I figure a length longer than 24" will be necessary for heavy loads and really full pack loads but I haven't tested with heavy loads yet. 26" may be an optimum setting that would work across the board for me.

If any of you have modified frame ext. lenghths please post your findings ,thanks.

Hey Nathan , I don't know my torso length but I am 5" 10". I will get someone to measure my torso soon. I get a little "wiggle" with the 28" extensions that I don't get with the 24"s. I have watched the pack adjustment video and did adjust the harness length that way but do get a little pack wiggle with 28" extensions. I haven't tried moving weight around in pack to see if that makes a difference and I do have the heavy stuff kind of high in the pack. The pack is distributing the load very well to my hips and the belt stays put even when jumping around with it for awhile.

Nathan should I remove plugs from extensions and install into frame ends when running 24" ?

I ended up cutting 2" off the frame extensions and it works great for me, not too tall not too short.

i am 5'5" with a 19" torso, and carry (work related) heavy loads (60+lbs), and use the extensions; it seems like it keeps the pack bag from sagging below the end of the frame.

So, I'm interested in a Unaweep 3900 and I'm little confused about the extensions on the ordering page. I'm 5'4" with a 17.5" torso length, so I would expect I would not need any extensions. But the ordering page does not give you the option for "No Extensions". So, would I order the 2" extension and remove if I didnt need it?

Thanks, Bucs
