Sparks from Woodstove are derstoying my 8 man

Postby seaarc24 » Tue Sep 29, 2015 12:31 pm

So I have had my Seekoutside for a couple of years now and use it as much as anyone else I would think in all kinds of conditions in Alaska. There are two things that I don't like about it and I am trying to figure out how to solve the worst of the two. Every time I use my wood stove I end up burning holes in the tent. I am using a spark arrestor and damper but have not figured out a way prevent burning holes. I am looking for other opinions on this subject and ways you have found to avoid the problem. An example, this past weekend I used the tent on a weekend moose hunt using the stove for two nights, this morning I am patching 7 new holes in the tent from 2 days of use. I know its easy to patch with tenacious tape but at this rate my tent will be 90% tenacious tape in a couple of years. Please share any ideas or ways you have come up with to prevent this. I have the problem with the seekoutside and light outdoors titanium stove.

Thanks
David

I've noticed 1 small burn hole in my tent so far that I actually have yet to patch. That was the result of 3-4 times of previous use using the stove in the tent.

I just recently used my 8 man, burning 4-5 days worth every night and sometimes in the morning. I've hosed it down and it has been hang drying since, but I'm curious to see if there are any more burn holes after I take another look at it. Hoping not. I burn mostly doug fir with occasional alder/cottonwood/cedar.

I only use the Seek Outside XL stove. What length of pipe are you running? I want to say they shipped the 8 man with 9' or 9.5' of pipe.

There are a lot of dependencies, but generally a longer pipe does the trick and if wind is not a big issue there is not reason not to add a foot of pipe. It can be more of a problem with certain woods , for instance we had a customer in SE Alaska that had issues and it was resolved through a longer pipe. Others in the mountain west often report no issues , for weeks on end using short pipes and ponderosa or aspen.

I always put a spark arrester at the end of the pipe and when i have wind or rain...i use a DIY rain cover...yet i have zero holes in my 4 man,i am using 7/feet pipe.
