Sparks from woodstove are destroying my 8 man!

Sparks from woodstove are destroying my 8 man!

Postby seaarc24 » Tue Sep 29, 2015 12:32 pm

So I have had my Seekoutside for a couple of years now and use it as much as anyone else I would think in all kinds of conditions in Alaska. There are two things that I don't like about it and I am trying to figure out how to solve the worst of the two. Every time I use my wood stove I end up burning holes in the tent. I am using a spark arrestor and damper but have not figured out a way prevent burning holes. I am looking for other opinions on this subject and ways you have found to avoid the problem. An example, this past weekend I used the tent on a weekend moose hunt using the stove for two nights, this morning I am patching 7 new holes in the tent from 2 days of use. I know its easy to patch with tenacious tape but at this rate my tent will be 90% tenacious tape in a couple of years. Please share any ideas or ways you have come up with to prevent this. I have this problem with the seekoutside and light outdoors titanium stove.

Thanks
David

I don't know how long your pipe is (ha ha) but if you have 2-3 feet sticking out the top of the tipi, the embers that escape have a little more 'hang time' to cool before hitting the nylon. Just a thought.

A dab of silicone is better than tenacious tape on small ember holes . A good draft , and longer pipe go a long ways . I can't comment on the lite outdoors stove.

Kevin, what length pipe do you recommend for your medium stove and an 8 man to prevent holes?

Thanks

You could go 9 ft or even 9.5 if you wanted

I have 2 DIY stoves(titanium pieces from SO) and one liteoutdoor stove(sorry SO)...the problem here is really not the type of woodstoves...longer pipe waybe but try to put a spark arrester at the end of the pipe too and a rain cover...and always set-up your tipi the right way...if you place your tipi with the pipe facing(stove jack)the wind...youll have ambers on your tipi. Its frustrating to bought a 1000$ tipi and having pin holes in only 2 days...ouch! Sorry for you man...but again the problem is not your stoves.
