Cimarron vs 4 man Tipi

How do these shelters differ? What factors would cause someone to choose one over the other?

I was making the same decision not too long ago.

My thoughts were,

4-man tipi pros: Ability to stand up fully (I'm 6'3"). More wind resistant shape. 20 stakeout points for foul weather holding strength. Flexi-pitch option.

Cimarron pros: Lighter weight. Less expensive. Simpler pitch.

I ended up going with a 4-man tipi.

Thanks for the response, Montana Marine. I'm leaning toward the Tipi since I already have some real lightweight shelters in case I want to go real light.

Did you get a stove as well? If so which one?

No stove yet. Eventually I'd like one of the Large size. I'm thinking the flat-top style seems more versatile for cooking on than the cylinder styles. But a little heavier. Everything is a tradeoff.

I'm curious as to how the Cimarron would fair in real foul or windy weather? Anybody have any experience with this shelter in harsh winds yet?

The 4 person will be better in really bad winds just due to shape / extra tie outs and guy outs. That being said, I have had the Cimarron in pretty solid winds and been very happy with it.

Here's a pic of a 4-man that gives some appreciation for how many stake loops there are. 20 stakes on that small of a perimeter (and 10 more guyouts) gives a pretty good grip on Mother Earth.....grin.

This 4-man is 70d fabric. That comes with a weight penalty (about 6 lbs all-up with pole/stakes), but it's a tough little shelter.

The stake number will change soon to 16/8 but it is essentially the same shelter

I used my Cimarron for two weeks on my MT archery elk hunt and it did really well with no issues in some 60+ wind, rain, and snow in the Centennial range above 10k feet. I hunt hard in grizzly country so I just sleep and dry out in mine. I would rather save weight for food and other gear. If your backpack hunting I think its perfect for 2 people with a stove/gear.
