Quietest and most durable between X-33, X-42 and X-51

Postby Fedster » Wed Aug 26, 2015 11:39 am

As by subject. I understand that Cordura face fabric is much better than standard Oxford weave in terms of abrasion, but:

X-51 might be so stiff to be really noisy
X-42 might still have an edge in durability and abrasion resistance over X-33

I use 'might' because I have never seen or tested any DP fabric so I have no personal experience, just theory. Based on looks I prefer the X-51 in slate, followed by the X-42 in olive and a distant third place for the x-33 camo, BUT I would rather have a quieter fabric if the durability is 'good enough'. I realise that 'good enough' is a pretty silly standard, but I tend to break stuff... Based on what I have read Cordura face is much better than Oxford weave, if the X-33 were in a different colour I'd have my choice there, but I'd rather not camo if other options are on the same ballpark of durability/quietness.

Cheers,

You could order a fabric sample set and get some swatches . Personally I have not seen any durability issue with any of them. I do have specs we have not published based on tabor abrasion tests and X42 tests the best . Realize that is a pretty standard industry test , but IMO applicability in the real world may be a little different.

The main difference is X42 is a tighter weave , which in tabor testing gives better results . Some people claim 500d Cordura is better than 1000 D because it is a finer weave as well

Well, the taber test is a standard but it is polite and civilised -- two abrasive wheels going on a constant rate, with nice little standard weights... I'm more interested in what happens if my pack meets a sharp protrusion in acceleration with the whole weight and shape of my stuff in it. As you said real world applications might not be fully captured by industry tests. What about noise? My understanding is that X-51 is very stiff, but I do not care if the noise level is comparable to X-42 or X-33...

Agreed , that is why the caveat on Taber tests. X51 is stiffer, but I would not consider it overkill. Noise , I doubt would be an issue. For hardcore rock abrasion, it would probably be the route I would go, however, I have had good luck with X33 / X42

Well that settles it then! In a couple of months I should be able to order and evo frame with a X51 4800 packbag. Can I get a day talon in X51 too (to keep the color match)?

Day Talon X51 maybe. I think that is a good option especially for a day pack, but really it depends on how popular X51 is. If it is popular the answer will be yes, but we need more / longer data points currently. We have a lot of colors now, and we have an idea what we would like to cull, but ultimately it is customers that drive it. The colors / fabrics customers like the best we make more stuff from.
