Backpack Discussion

What, Kevin, don't obsess?! Where's the fun in that? I get you though. I took if for two miles on my morning dog walk with about 25 pounds. Felt way better than my last pack, which on has limited torso adjustability. I'm keep tinkering with the fit, just to understand the pack better. I think I might want to tweek the bottom out just a bit, because of the curve in my spine. Also, do you ever custom cut or re-cut the yokes? I'm not very big and the yoke works but I think it would be better if it were narrower. Just a thought.

We can but most prefer bigger yokes than smaller so over time they have become a little larger longer. The connection at the bottom can be changed if you like as it is a split bar on the Daisy chain , but I think most will find middle position best

Here's mine

I liked the idea of the Divide, but the final product didn't quite hit the sweet spot for me. I modified a used Unaweep packbag to accomplish what I had envisioned the Divide as being. I'm just posting it here as food for thought and discussion. I do respect what Kevin and SO has made, but everyone dreams of a custom built pack with all their little obsessions catered to, so that's what I created...

First off, I wanted a large rear stretch mesh pocket. Really large. Big enough to swallow my 4-piece packraft paddle with plenty of room left over for a jacket, etc.

Image

I ran it from near the bottom of the pack up 18" in height, and pleated the bottom to expand so that even with a stuffed packbag the pocket would still accept junk with ease.

I removed the bottom compression strap and added a vertical daisy chain from inside the bottle pockets up to about half way up the pack. This is so I can use Voile straps to attach skis in a vertical or horizontal carry. Compression straps are nearly always mediocre for actually securing something to a pack. All they do well is compress. Voile straps on a daisy chain are absolutely fool-proof, set-once-and-forget sanity-savers. I have a cinch-down strap at the top of the side daisy chains for cincing the roll top to. I really prefer to cinch the roll top down rather than join the roll top ends together. This also eliminates the need for the over-the-top strap. This is just personal preference.

I knew I wasn't going to use a talon with this packbag, so I got rid of the 'load shelf' entirely.

Image

I moved the load lifters, got rid of the over-the-top straps, and added a grab loop.

Image

To let the pack ride as low as possible, I moved the lower packbag attachment straps up a few inches on the bag, and am running it with no frame extensions at all. This means my load lifters aren't doing as much, but in this configuration I don't plan on hauling anything serious.

Thanks to Kevin and the SO crew for making such a great platform for tinkering. I sew on my HMG and other packs, but they are not nearly as easy to mess with. 8-)

Cheers

Nice work . We have had several of those in various packs we have used for testing , but not mated all of them together ( although the side panel Daisy chain and pleated integrated pocket we have not done ) . Our pleated mesh pocket is the mesh Talon , which swallows a lot of gear or Morel mushrooms as I used it several times

When you say the divide is optimized for a 24 inch frame, does this simply mean that if you put on 4 inch extensions say there would be a little more of a gap between the bottom of the frame and the bottom of the pack back relative to the unaweep which I think you say is optimized for the 26 inch frame?

Yes correct. You can do it , but there will be more gap

If I were to order a Divide with the intention of adding a floating compression panel and a multi lid at a later time would I need to specify anything at the time of purchase?
More to the point, do I need to order the optional strapping in order to use the lid/talon at a later time?

You would need to order an extra buckle set , the rest should work

Where should the shoulder yoke be stationed at when you buy the pack? I bought one used and I am having a hell of a time with the shoulder yoke. Belt is great, but there is no, "pop two buckles and pack is set."
I have tried sliding the yoke up along its attachments till there is little strap left. I have it so the yoke is at c7 but it's sloppy and the lifters pull the harness up so it looks like I have wings. If I crank down on the shoulder straps it's now too tight across the front of the shoulder. And there is zero tension on the locks attached to yoke height.
