Ongoing 12 Man Review

Your Scout stove is probably an excellent choice for base camping with a large tipi.

Our cylinder heats up the 12x14 wall tent very well, and seems like a bit overkill for the 12-man tipi. But it can be managed with moderate stoking, and using the dampers in the intake, and in the pipe.

It heated a 12x12 pyramid with 4' walls pretty easily to the high teens.

How much room does your stove take in the 12-man? It's tough to get a good read from the pictures. Does your stove have a 5" stove pipe opening? How much did you have to cut the stove jack to get it to fit?

I don't think the size of this stove is an issue at all. At 14x11x24" it is larger than the titanium stoves by a good margin, but in the 12-man I think it's a good fit.

The stove jack was already cut for the 3.2" pipe. I noted there was an oval template drawn on the jack material, with slits cut out from a center point.

What I did was follow that lead. I drew a 5" oval roughly centered in the jack, and cut slits out from center in the same fashion as the original. Some of my cuts crossed some of the original cuts, but no big deal, it works fine. Here are a couple more pics that might help illustrate the stove size in relation to the tent, and the modified stove jack orientation.

I'm betting it's an inline spark arrestor.

By the way, how tall is that stovepipe?

Yes the square box is an inline spark arrestor.

There are four pieces of 24" pipe. The spark arrestor is another 11", the stove + legs is 21" tall. 128" total.

Subtract about 1" lost at each of the five insertion joints. Should be about 123", or 10 ft 3 in overall from the ground to the top of the pipe.

Here's a few pics using the 12-Man. We were out fishing today and it was a cool breezy day. The tipi was easy to pitch in the wind, and gave us an awesome shelter from the wind. It was in the 40s with a cool breeze, but warm and comfortable in the tipi.
