New Tent "Cimarron"

Re: New Tent

Postby Axel » Sat Feb 28, 2015 9:39 am

I spoke with Angie, yesterday, on the new Unaweep panel loader and this Cimarron. These are the items that really interest me and I do have one query; WHY is there no mossy netting option?

Seems like many folks would use this for summertime general camping and near H20, where nasty bugs are all too abundant.

So, might netting become an option?

Cheers, Dewey

That is anAngie question. It is mostly about production and being able to deliver / predict faster. You can ask her and tell her you are willing to wait and see what she says. However we do feel nests provide the full enclosure option for most

Cool tent! How much weight does a stove jack add?

Oh and I see that this is bigger than the LBO... besides the size difference, what would a person need to consider when choosing between the LBO and the Cimarron?

Stove jack is generally 3 ounces.

Decision point, the Cimarron is a bit taller, feels bigger and roomier, but does not have the modularity to go from base + 3 to base - tarp - base.

Since it is taller, it requires a more substantial pole, which will weigh more, unless you use trekking poles linked or cut a tree limb etc.

The Cimarron can sleep 4 although 2 is better. The LBO and 3 part would be a stretch for 4 certainly.

The CImarron is a better 2 person + stove setup IMO.

While the LBO and CImarron have a lot in common an SL5 is probably a better comparison for size. The Cimarron in my opinion feels a bit bigger, a bit more optimized, while IMO being more user friendly and offering additional flexibility and features. It is a little taller as well.

Pretty close to pulling the trigger on one of these.... what's the estimated wait time these days?

Also, I'm looking at the pole situation. I could definitely see myself being interested in a separate pole in the future. Maybe an aluminum one for car camping, when weight isn't as huge of a priority. Do you have an aluminum pole that would work with the Cimarron?

Most of the time, though, I'd like to use trekking poles. I usually backpack with them, and it's nice to save weight. Do you make a pole link doohickey, or you have a recommended way to link up poles? I use the standard Black Diamond Trail poles, and I'm thinking the pole extension wouldn't quite do the job.

We will have a linking doohickey available :)

An REI aluminum tarp pole will work with the pointy end down. We will continue to try and source a better aluminum pole.

The first production run should be available end of march give or take a few days. The next run will likely be 3 -4 weeks after that.

Very cool. I'm just full of questions, but I figure it would do some good to ask here where everyone can see the answers.

I know the standard 2 man nest is designed to be integrated with the LBO without extra stakes. Is the same thing true with the Cimarron if I use some cordage?

Like I said in an email last week, I'm on the fence between the LBO and the Cimarron. How do you think the Cimarron compares to the LBO in terms of dealing with wind?

Do you think the Cimarron would be a little excessive as a one person shelter? I know it's all personal preference, but it's good to hear different perspectives. In the summer, it will be me and the wife, but I have a feeling my fall adventures will be solo about half the time (with a small-ish stove).

The super light weight of the LBO appeals to me, and it would definitely be a huge upgrade in available space compared to the 2-man backpacking tents we've used in the past. My stove is a homemade one modeled on the design on the Hill People Gear website, but I haven't run it in a tent yet and I think it might work better for a smaller shelter. But part of me thinks that the Cimarron doesn't weigh much more, the price is right, it's taller, and I never really hear folks complain about having too much space.

Standard 2 person nest shares rear tie out points , with a little cordage it is drop in.
I suspect Cimarron will be quieter in the wind due to lack of beaks which can make some noise

To much for one ? That depends , I would say a lot for one but not overkill

Weight only a tad more mostly due to pole.
