Yeah. Seems great so far! Wife was a little unsure when I first told her about floor less. Now that she has seen it she is stoked!

It is a pretty big testament as to the quality of the design and the production team that you guys are pitching a shelter this size this well your first times. Very nice!

You guys are killing me. A) I ordered my 8-man a couple of weeks ago and while I'm waiting patiently I am getting anxious, but B) the weather looks much nicer than the -10 we had this AM in upstate NY! We still have 30" of snow on the ground just set the record for the coldest month (any month) which was last set in 1915.

Although, I hope to be able to test my tipi and stove out in this weather.

I have been warned by the wife that she won't sleep in it without a nest to protect from bugs so I'll be throwing that on the order at some point Kevin.

Hi Chris,

welcome to the 8 man team, haha. I'm glad you got a stove with that cold weather. You'll have to fire it up in the tent on the snow base and see how cozy you can get it.

I'm planning a trip next weekend into our Olympic Range here in Western WA, looking at a wilderness area just inside the park. Hopefully it's not too rainy! I will be sure to get some pics

My 8 man was a gift for Christmas but other than a quick setting up in my backyard and a break in of the stove, I've still not used it on an overnight but that will end this weekend. I work with a college outdoor program so my weekends are filled with trips (yea, don't feel too badly for me) but once our xc ski trip is over on Saturday I'm going to get out and pitch the tipi, set up the stove and move in for the night. My wife is even game to join me but I think that's because it's only a short walk back to the house if she's not happy

Since we have so much snow right now where I live in central NYS I'm planning on shoveling down to ground level later today after work. The only time I have set it up was back after Christmas when we were snow free. I don't want to fiddle with making dead men for stakes so I figure being down to the ground will make for an easier set up. I'll be using 12" galvanized spike nails for stakes but am open to any and all suggestions if you've got them.

One last thing...does anyone ever set this up without digging down to ground level in the snow? Just curious. If you do, please feel free to share your pitching tips and tricks. Thanks!

That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.

12 inch nails is overkill. A 5 or 6 inch nail will be fine, and concrete screws with a screw driver work well if you are car camping.

A lot of people set them up directly on snow. In deep snow they will even dig out inside and get a lot more room. I know at the Hillpeoplegear.com Rondy last weekend there were 3 6 person SO tipis set up that way. I was not there.

We also have some customers that have used them a lot skiing and use SMC snow anchors for instance in this photo

I have some Titanium Snow anchors similar to SMC ones that seem to work well thus far, and are .5 of an ounce, so no more than a regular tent stake.
