Just wondering if anyone has used a non-packable(by people, anyway) stove in a tipi? Something like a Nuway or Cabela's Sheepherder Packer stove. I seem to run across them fairly cheap, and since I won't be hunting off of my back for another year or so, I was thinking about getting one of these to save a few pennies.

We have used the Kni-co stoves which are essentially the Cabela's I believe. They work fine, the only drawback is usually the stove pipes are not long enough so you need to get extra sections at True Value or some where similar. They have a tendency to rust as well, but with a little care you will be ok. Since most of these stoves are made for wall tents there are a few differences, namely shorter pipes and often the spark arrestor is on top of the pipe, since they are reachable in a wall tent.

For a long burn, I'd run the Alaskan or similar Alaskan Jr if I were not packing in and loosing a bit of real estate was not an issue. Use the stack robber to help filter out sparks.

Thanks for the info. Have you ever used the kni-co packer jr by any chance?

Yes we have used a packer jr. It is ok for heating a 6 man, however it is not great. If I was taking a stove that was not packable, or not for packing, I would get a larger one to get a longer burn, better cooking surface and have less wood cutting. In fact, for car camping get something you can use pre split wood in if possible. The price difference on the Kni-co stoves is not large. The Packer Jr will suffice, it will just be more work.
