Tipi Colors: It shouldnt matter, but it does

Postby jigstick » Sun Feb 01, 2015 12:14 pm

I have been in the market for an 8man Tipi for the past year, going back and forth between the SO and Kifaru. I have a few Kifaru products that I use on my hunts and like them. However, Ive come to really like the design of the SO tipis much better. I was just about to place an order for an 8man Tipi bundle, but found out that the Grizzly color is no longer availble. The redwood and tan are going to look just so hideous in the western PA environments where I hunt. No I know color shouldnt matter, but at $1500 I want to get something that I like. Does anybody have any experience with the Redwood? Does it appear as reddish in person as it does in the pictures?

The redwood is really just a medium toned brown IMO. The color fit in fine here in eastern PA. I go out more west a good bit and don't think the redwood would stand out nearly as much as you think. I feel the redwood would fit right in perfectly in the fall and winter but be more noticeable in the summers where green is everywhere, but the grizzly would be the opposite. More subdued in summer but stand out more in fall and winter.

Both are good colors but I much preferred redwood for eastern PA.

IMHO, even in summer I don't think it would stand out very much. I can't count the number of times I've passed deer on Summer hikes (I think this color is more in line with their hue), only noticing them as they ran off.

those pictures do help to put it into a better perspective. Maybe Im just used to my Cabelas Bighorn 3 tent too much. I have never been a big fan of the coyote tan / brown color. I can't say that I hate the redwood, but I can't say that I like it either. I think I could "get by" with it, but I would much rather have that Grizzly color or some shade of dull green or a greenish brown. I don't need my Tipi until mid summer though. I have a mule deer hunt out west, and a moose hunt coming up. Maybe I will cross my thumbs and see if SO offers a green shade soon. If not, Im not sure what I will do.

I agree atomicsparrow i don't think it would stand out much if at all, I just think the redwood does a really great job when things are less green. Still would do pretty well in the summer IMO.

Jigstick, I agree with you in that I really don't like coyote. It sticks out like a sore thumb around here. The redwood is a whole different kettle of fish in my eyes. With that said color is a very subjective thing and you obviously don't like this one. If it is important enough for you to influence your decision then there is not a whole lot anyone else can say to change that. Hopefully SO offers a color more inline with what you want at some point.

We do have lab dip samples of a custom green, we thought was very nice but most people seem to prefer Redwood. If you are interested, and there is enough interest we can do a run of it. I will have to see if we still have the lab dips around to photo or send. I would say it had an olive look to it, but was a less strong. That being said, it will probably has some shine to it when new, and we need several customers that would prefer it over Redwood to offer it.

I live out west, as in the Pacific Northwest where it is very green. In my opinion, I think the Redwood looks awesome, and just from the pictures, seems too look great in almost all environments. However I know that is my personal opinion. I'm currently waiting to receive my 8 man in Redwood Brown. When I do, I can post up pictures of it setup out here to show you how it looks in this environment. Personally, I don't view it as a shade that will stand out like a sore thumb by any means. I prefer this Redwood Brown color (which I think actually looks like a grizzly brown) than Kifaru's tan. My 2 cents.

well after seeing some more pictures of the Redwood in the field, Im still undecided. I think for the time being I will just wait and see if a green option is offered later this year. I would just hate to have to settle for a color that isn't "exactly" what I'm looking for. Ill keep my fingers crossed.
