The body is less resistant than the floor. Floor, should be 3000 MM Hydro , Back sections are probably 800 mm. More breathable to reduce condensation. Yes, IMO the nest is a suitable fair weather shelter on it's own using some natural protection.

Yea I tried it yesterday and found just going right to the pole to be easier also.

I'm going to be taking out base and nest tomorrow, and am thinking I want the simplicity of just pitching them together, especially in the cold. What in your opinion is the best method for attaching the nest to the base. Just tie all the cordage to the tie outs and and inner guy outs at home ahead of time?

Yes you can clip nest top to beak area as well and unclip as you set up

When using a trekking pole and extender sometimes it's easier to attach nest to top trekking pole basket and then use extender for rest of height

Can a nest fit into the BT-2?

Thanks - I was thinking bivy might be more flexible too. Or the LBO is very attractive.
