Rigged a porch/vestibule for the nest

Postby Log9mm » Tue Dec 02, 2014 9:00 pm

I know this might not interest a lot of people here as it seems most are hunters/outdoors men who are setting up base camps but I'm just a hiker/camper who likes keeping my pack weight low. I bought the nest mostly so I could use the LBO with my girlfriend who likes to have a floor and netting but when I got it and realized it could be used by itself I got more excited about it.

I will definitely be bringing just the nest on lots of shorter trips with reasonable weather predicted. I plan to use solid site selection and natural cover but getting caught in a serious rain still makes me a little a nervous. As I already carry a poncho I came up with this rig as a supplement to the more exposed areas of the nest so it could handle a bit more rain comfortably.

I expect the pitch of the poncho will be at least a little tighter when outside and using real stakes, but this was pretty easy and would certainly help in a down pour so I am pleased it actually works even if not so pretty. Overall I'm undecided how useful this will be for me as I'm not big on using rain gear as a shelter. But this isn't a shelter its a shelter supplement so I'll try it out in the woods sometime and see how it goes. If I really like it I may have a poncho tarp made to fit this pitch a bit better as I'm in the market for a new poncho anyway.

Any feedback or ideas are always appreciated.

Thanks for sharing . I would say we have a fair amount of lightweight backpackers around as well. I really only base camp in the fall and later so most of the summer I move camp often. There is nothing wrong with the nest as a fair weather shelter, we have ( the family ) done it several times just using cover sometimes a tarp rigged up. It's functional and easy to make work to your desires

You are probably right. I just see more teepees and stove jacks than I see on most of my forums and you said people rarely use just the base, which will be my go to. But interestingly enough you guys make gear that appeals to a wider range than most others do (no ultra light guy is ever going to consider a kifaru tarp or pack for example) and that is pretty damn cool.

Tipis come default with the stove jacks, they usually add only minimal weight of 3 ounces. We have a lot of customers that are very far north. A lot are hunters, but some are skiers, or skiers and hunters etc. I know what you mean with UL guys, but when you consider you can go with an 8 person tent and stove still for under 10 lbs all in its still lighter than A LOT of tent options especially for a family or group.

We try to be more multi use in our approach, but made well enough to avoid many of the shortcomings of a lot of UL gear. Not trying to dig on anyone there. If I had to classify or put a description I'd probably call it something like "All Season , Hard Use , High Performance UL gear" or something like that.
