LBO Base pitch practice!

I just got back from a short hike with my GF and pups at a local trail to practice pitching the LBO in the woods, which haven't done yet (just got it and only set it up in my rock garden and indoors). I thought I would share a couple of pictures. I purposely picked a less than ideal spot to pitch it for better practice and to show my girlfriend what tarp camping can be about. She had expressed interest in trying it (shes only done traditional double wall tents) so I wanted her to try it out before deciding on shelter for an upcoming trip. Anyway my pitching could use some refining but that will come with practice. Overall I love it, and she does too!









Any feedback on the pitch is appreciated. Otherwise I'll keep updating as I practice and get better. Thanks for looking!

When it is three sided, it's really just your imagination that limits you outside of some basic geometry. I tend to go a bit lower on 3 side on the front, but it really just depends. Some people have even raised the back center and done more of a traditional tarp. For max space though, a higher such as yours works well, especially if you find a slightly sheltered area or big rock to pitch near. It's hard to provide support much because there is no real right or wrong with 3 sides.

Thanks Kevin. I intend to keep practicing and refining my technique to get it tighter, but it is adequate as a shelter as is and I'm very pleased with it overall. One thing I'm going to try that I've seen in the videos is the front side tie outs being flared out a little more compared to where I have them here. I'd like to mess with various other pitching methods, but want to get a good method for pitching tight in the normal configuration first.

If I were pitching on somewhat uneven ground and and one of the corners sagged considerably while the other side was tight is it safe to assume the sagging side was higher than the others?

Also Kevin you mentioned you like to bring it a little lower 3 sided. What does that do to the pitch compared to higher how I have it in the above pics.

Yes saggy corner is higher ground. I have set up tipis on super uneven ground before, and then I do the high point as tight, and then set other pegs or use guy outs on the other sides.

In 3 sided, I usually do just trekking pole height which is usually 52 to 54 inches

Thanks Kevin. Just to clarify, basically set the height and higher side stake out in a manner that makes that side the tightest, and then adjust the rest of the pitch accordingly and making up for any slack with guy out points located halfway up the tarp?

Thanks, I will do that next time. As it was I just readjusted some stakes and guyed out the saggy side and all was good.

And one with my buddy in there who at 6'5" 250 lbs is pretty big. I was impressed to see how much space he had in there.
