4 or 6

4 or 6

Postby Shewie » Tue Sep 23, 2014 10:52 am

I've had a few emails back and forth with Kevin and I still can't decide on the 4 or 6 man tipi. Initially I wanted to keep it as compact as i could, plus I already have a 6-8 man nordic tipi, but the more I compare specs I'm thinking I should just get the bigger one.

Intended use is going to be canoe and winter pulk trips, I'll be solo most of the time, occasionally somebody else might share. I like my space but at the same time I don't want something too big to rattle around in. I've mocked out the footprint for the 4 man in my garden and it looks plenty big enough, allowing for the large stove I think it'll be a palace for one.

Am I missing a trick by not choosing the 6? I've had my goods in the basket for a week and still haven't checked out :)

Also if anyone has any photos of the 4 man I'd be glad to see them, there's not many to see on the website.

Hi Shewie (not the Shewie on Bushcraftuk by any chance?!)

I've had the Kifaru 4-man and Seekoutside 6 & 8 man tipis. Main advantages of the smaller 4 & 6 man tipis are weight and is there's much less airspace to heat! Remember that the angle of the tipi walls robs you of a lot of space otherwise available on wall-tents, for example. Main advantage of the 8-man is space and room to stroll around upright. In the 4-man you have to crouch a bit unless in the centre, but unfortunately that's where the stove-pipe is too. I like the space, and for single camping the 6-man is probably the ideal compromise between luxury and weight.

Having said that, I sold the 4 & 6-man tents, and currently enjoy the 8-man even when camping solo. Its only a lb or two heavier than the 6-man, is easy to erect single-handed, and the usable space is so much greater! (just to add more confusion, I also love my LBO base-Tarp-LBO base set-up for when weight really matters!)

Hi Andy, yup same one :)

I think if I didn't already have the other tipi I'd probably go for the 6, but there's no point me having two shelters the same size. I like the idea of a cosy little 4 man, a bolt hole for winter pukling and canoe trips up in Scotland.

Some more photos of the 4 would be really helpful, especially some interior shots with a stove in place, hopefully somebody will have something.

Congratulations. I've got the large SO stove and it will turn a 4-man tipi into a sweat lodge!

Toasty? I'm talking about too hot to even stand outside the entrance!

You think i'll be better with the medium?

I saw the 4 man was bundled with the large stove in the hot tent deals so figured it would be a good match?

Nah - just don't overload the firebox.

Besides, the Large will come in useful when you realise you should have bought the 6-man and sell the 4-man ;)
