Summer Workouts

Postby Nathan C » Tue Jul 15, 2014 4:04 am

What is everyone doing to get in shape for the fall?

Yesterday I ran a mile and then did hill sprints on the hill behind my house. Today I'm canoeing/fishing.

I've been a bum, although I did 15 -16 miles Sunday in the mountains on rough terrain, I have not done much else.

I started running but gout always takes the fun out of it... So back to riding a stationary bike or using the treadmill with my pack on.

Trail running, bike commuting and as many core strengthening exercises as I can get in at the gym and home.

I did a short training hike with 80 lbs in the Evo this morning. It's been a few weeks since I did heavy work, and my hip flexors are letting me know it!

I vowed to be in better shape for this year's western hunt and what has really helped me are the group exercise classes at Golds Gym. I am doing traditional aerobics, weight training, and HIIT classes 3/wk and back to backs on Saturday when I can. Each class is an hour and it has really worked for me. The group psychology helps me to not bail out when tired and puts a little competition into the mix. Now, I had to adjust to 110lbs women kicking my butt for a while but that was motivation in and of itself also. Bearing down the last month but pleased with he results so far.

That's awesome Hatchie! I've been doing a lot of Insanity lately. I nearly threw up the other morning. Its a love/hate relationship.

I'm fortunate to have the Chugach Range, with multiple trails, literally in my back yard. Since March I have been doing several hikes a week, although during the month of June I spent more time fishing, so didn't get out into the mountains much. My sole purpose for working out is to stay in shape for my mountain hunts in the fall. I think actually getting out into the mountains with a pack on, and carrying the same amount of wt. that I carry while hunting, is the best form of exercise for me plus it's a whole lot more enjoyable than going to a gym. That being said, I do belong to a gym but only use it in the winter time.

Troutbum, I agree. If I didn't have work and family obligations I'd be a full time backpacker up until hunting season. I love backpacking. Its one of the few things I never get tired of.
