I should maybe ask my question a different way... with a bottom entry like the Hennessey, can I work a pad or under quilt in or am I a no go because of the entry. Am having trouble there...

Thanks

Stseeker there is a custom sewer over on hammockforums who does a LOT of Hennessy mods. Number 1 is converting a bottom entry to a side entry.

If you're using foam then a two layer bottom is nearly mandatory. A single layer bottom is better suited to an underquilt.

Okay, thanks alot, I'll check it out. So sounds like the Hennessey might not be ideal for cooler temps unless I do some mods. Would it be better to just get a different one for cooler weather? Does the Hennessey have some advantages that makes putting cash into it for mods worth it?

The contributions to this thread, both questions and knowledge are appreciated. On the subject of quilts, what's best? Down or synthetics? Why? I'm guessing that the pros and cons with quilts are based upon the same criteria as they are with sleeping bags...weight, resistance to moisture, etc?

Hennesey Hammocks also have side zip versions available.

They are a great all in one system and are typically available NOW, with no wait time.

I prefer a good down with a good DWR coating, although as far as synthetic the Ultra Lamina looks good.

Down advantages - packs smaller , lighter, generally drapes better , better longevity . With a good DWR getting it wet from the outside takes effort or unfortunate circumstance

Synthetic advantages - Insulates better when wet, cheaper

I'm not an expert, but here are some of my observations on the recent state of the market.

Dry Down and the like, not sure, we will need to see how it does over years. The problem is , some of the dry down coatings allow them to call it a higher loft than it really is. So my question is how good is the coating ? If it wears off, or degrades then the value is not there. After about 750 -800 fill with down, the return starts to become smaller.

The Climashield type quilts and bags are effective and inexpensive . In my experience, having built a couple, I think lamination is the way to go (ala wiggies , or ultra lamina). There are a lot of differences in the various Climashield types, but they are all pretty similar just different densities.

The fact synthetics perform better when wet does not mean they do not have some performance loss when wet. They will dry much fast though.

IMO, I think the best balance is a light synthetic exterior over a down quilt or bag. A light overbag is not really weight efficient though to get to the best temperature rating because it effectively has four layers of material on top vs two. However, when compared to pure synthetic, the weight advantage of down makes it close to a wash.

Thanks for the replies.
Kevin, I've looked at a lot of hammock quilts the past few days and can't recall seeing anything using Ultra Lamina. Can you point me towards a company that does so I can read up on it?
Thanks.

I was talking strictly sleeping bags ... I don't do hammocks :) my reference was to laminated climashield ala the mountain hardware ultra lamina
