Bear Canisters

We get a lot of questions regarding Bear Canisters. Here is what we know works and doesn't based on my 8.5 by 13 canister. If you have other ones that work or don't please add the details.

3900 Packbag - It will fit vertically, but is iffy if it will fit horizontally at the bottom. To fit horizontally, it would require a side zip to be able to slide in.

4800 Packbag - It will fit in either orientation and can make the turn to horizontal at the bottom when loaded vertically. WIth a side zip it is very easy to load it at the bottom.

A slightly smaller diameter bear canister would fit in a day talon, however I suspect it would need to be 8 inch diameter or less.

We use a Bearikade Expedition (9"x14.5") and a custom size Bearikade (9"x16") in our 4800 packbags (Unaweep, Evolution). We use them only vertically and have never tried to fit either one horizontally. We are quite happy with it in our current testing and will take them next weekend for a four week trip with our packrafts across Alaska.

If it's at all possible, would you mind trying to fit your Expedition into the packbags horizontally? I'm curious as to whether or not it would fit properly.

I know its no help but I avoid using bear canisters as they're heavy and awkward. I'm in black bear country a lot and so far haven't found a need for them and have dealt with a lot of pest bears.
