packed size on 12 man

packed size on 12 man

Postby wisam » Wed May 07, 2014 9:23 pm

I'm looking for my first hot tent and am considering either a 8 or 12 man tipi. It will primarily be used as a base camp anywhere from 1-3 miles from the car so weight isn't a huge issue.

Anyone have any pics of the packed size of the 12 man?

Thoughts on the 30 vs 70 denier? I plan to use it with kids at some point so durability is an issue but not sure if the 70 denier is necessary or not.

Any issues heating a tent as large as a 12 man with an XL stove?

How much more durable is the 70d vs. the 30d fabric?

I'm wondering the same thing regarding 30 vs 70d. I've never had problems damaging tents I the past but I would like to use the tent with kids and a dog someday. At the same day the 70d looks like a 4 lb hit which is substantial since I always carry camp on my back.

This is a hard question actually. Personally I've never had an issue with the 30d and I've even had goats walk on it , and in it without much regard. Personally I think it's a matter of care and preference. If I had an70d available and was taking goats I would take it, because I know they are nosey and don't care if they walk on it. If it is always on my back , not a pulk it's 30 D every time to save weight . If its primarily car camping with a family dogs playing frisbee etc , then i would probably go 70d. I hope I'm clearer than mud it's just different people prefer different things. For instance with packs I could probably go cuben and be fine for years , and just take some care in canyon country, however I could also use Vx42 and just not worry about it and carry a few ounces extra. Me personally ? Ill go cuben for now, however if I said this is an expensive piece of gear and I don't really want to be careful ( or I did haul roping on rock faces ) then id go the heavier fabrics for maximum life span.

I wouldn't say that lighter fabrics really require more care, especially when you control the situation, I'd say they cause less stress when you don't control the complete saturation.

Make sense ?

BTW 70d tan , in a 12 man without pole but including stakes is less than 10 lbs.

I would say its about a 3 lb difference in a 12 but perhaps a tad more. We try to overstate most things , because the truth is everything can be off by an ounce or two based on a lot of variables. We try to be really accurate , but provide a small margin for error

Would somebody be able to provide the packed size on an 8 man? Dimensions or pictures are helpful, thanks!

Which fabric ? I can give you stuff sack size, although realistically with good packing it is about half size. In 30D without screens, you can get it pretty small. A 6 person tipi packed can be about 14 by 10 by 6 without any compression (850 CI). An 8 person is probably 10000 CI.

8 man tipi stuff sack is 20 long 30 diameter , a 30d tent without screens fits easily

Thanks Kevin. I should have specified, but I was curious on the 30D and without screens.
