Recomended stove pipe freeboard above Tipi

Postby robaho » Thu Feb 09, 2017 4:52 pm

Greetings to All:

I'm considering purchasing a SO XL woodstove for use in my newly purchased SO 6 man tipi. My question is what do you guys find is the optimum chimney pipe freeboard height above the tipi peak to prevent spark burn holes in tent material? Also assume the SO damper/spark arrestor is operational and that I will be dampering air-intake down overnight and then operating full blast in morning (i.e. creosote production and then burn-off at a max). At this time I'm considering up to 5 feet of pipe freeboard with option to trim material, if needed. Besides added cost, is there any other detriment to lengthening chimney pipe? Draft is obviously improved. I don't expect camping in winds exceeding 30 knots.

Please advise thoughts, thanks!

5 feet is excessive above the tent . With a 6 man 9 feet would be fine total . Get an ultra arrestor for lots of burning in the cold

Here's a visual of a 9' pipe on an SXL in a 6-person. About 2'2" above the peak of the tipi. The XL stove would add about 3" for the taller stove.

I concur with both Kevin and Shane . . . 2 feet above the peak seems to be just right for me too on my Redcliff. . . I'm using the Ultra damper also
