stove ring to damper pipe

Just used my stove in a new 8 man tipi while logging on the Yukon over the weekend. Was confused over the pipe going inside or outside the damper sleeve, tried it both ways and seemed safer when the pipe was on the outside. Found on the blog where Kevin stated it needs to go on the outside but I am unable to get a stove ring any closer that 16" to 18" from the damper sleeve. Wondering if I should be able to get the ring closer to the sleeve? I saw one picture on the net that showed a ring all the way down on top of the sleeve? Also would like to know what people do to keep the pipe square on the ends, when I pushed the pipe through the jack it kept wanting to come way out of square on the ends making them angled rather than square. Wonder if it would be a good idea to install a small bolt on both end of the pipe to keep it from wanting to spin as it fed through the stove jack.
