Pack goats

Any one here use pack goats?

Will be getting some but not sure when. Hoping by summer.

I used to have pack goats. I personally really liked them as pets, and somewhat liked them in the backcountry. As pets, they were very personable and very loving, but you have to keep them in their fencing as they are pretty good at finding ways out. In the backcountry, they change your trip a bit. It's not as simple as throw your stuff in pack, show up at a TH and walk. You have to have leaders , plans for water crossings etc so it is different. That being said, outside of their obsession with getting in my tent, they were very easy and fun to backpack with as long as not a lot of water crossings were on the menu. They like to hang out by a campfire and are somewhat entertaining. It's just different. The biggest problems I had with them really was competition for my attention with my dogs. I can't walk enough to keep everyone happy.

You should have seen the funny looks when I took 3 dogs and 2 goats out on a walk at the same time . Funny looks and odd comments for sure , some people didn't know what kind of odd crew was following me

I hate to be a downer but there are very serious concerns with pack goats passing on disease to native mountain goats and sheep in the backcountry. It runs a real risk of wiping out goats in entire areas. Again, I don't mean to be a downer but I know this is a conscientious group and want to do what is best to preserve our hunting opportunities down the road. Please research it before you get a goat to haul gear and make the decision for yourself. I thought goats were a great idea when I first saw them until a biologist friend opened my eyes.
