My son did well with tenkara his first day. It took some practice on landing but he finally started bringing them in

A little update , my son Eli who has never liked fishing loves tenkara and always wants to go. He's actually pretty good at it as well and caught several brook trout today both in an alpine lake and a small stream.

My take on why he likes it ? He's a kid and likes water , wading etc plus with tenkara it is more active than bait fishing by a long shot and landing / playing is more fun.

What rod do you use? I've been looking into this but have a hard time figuring out how pricey I should go. The most popular choices tend to carry somewhat of a price tag that I'm nit sure I want to pay for something I want to try.

The standard rod length is 3.6m or 12ft. Teton Tenkara has a nice rod overview (search for "Annual Rod Review Summary -- January 2014"). I ended up with the AllFishingBuy Hirame-ML-3909 and was happy with it on lakes (tight in small streams though). What is important is the line as I did not like the AllFishingBuy level lines as much (heavier than needed). The pink 3.5 Tenkara USA level line for USD 20 is more expensive but it worked really well for me. Recently I used Keiichi Okushi's services from tenkaraya(dot)com to order a Sagiri 39MC (zooms from 3.4m to 3.9m) which to my surprise are still available in Japan. Shipping was reasonable. (Just mentioning this to show that you are not limited to what is offered by the hand full of US dealers.)

I got into Tenkara a couple years ago from the BHA Rendezvous in Boise. For fishing the small headwater streams in the Appalachians and Blue Ridge, it's a treat. I hope to have some pictures soon from the next trip with the Tenkara rig. This trip will be a bit special, and I hope it's successful.

I have a Rhodo and a iwanna rods from tenkara usa. Have had about two months now. Have fished all my life an I loving the tenkara fishing. Have caught tons of bream in farm ponds and some native rainbow trout so far. Can't wait to get out and use them some more.
