DIY tarp/tent material

I'm looking to sew my own tarp/tent that will be used for winter camping. I am planning to integrate a wood stove using a stove jack.
What type of material should I use for the tarp? I don't think canvas is really an option because of the weight.
Any thoughts?

That looks great Reaper, camping with a log fire is something I have got to try!
