Favorite Sleeping Bags

Postby woody29 » Fri Sep 19, 2014 7:24 pm

Im about ready to upgrade a couple of old tried and true bags that have served my well many many years. I would be interested to learn what others are using for bags and how they are liking them. The more I research online the less clear I seem to become.

Thanks for your input!

What is your sleeping bag usage ? That will go a long ways in determining what works well.
I use a EE quilt in warmer weather or for lighter trips and a marmot helium for cooler weather. I personally favor down for most anything

I am in Wyoming and camp periodically all year long. My bags are all poly of some sort. My hammock quilts are all down. I think I am going to try and use the quilts as a 3 season option. I'm curious about Wiggys and their claims. My go to bag for many years has been a TNF Cats Meow. Ok, that's the basic back story. I've been reading and researching various vendors and claims. Of course, each one makes the best bag. I'd like to hear how pleased people have been with their bags in real world use and real world temp.
Thanks

If I were to go synthetic I would look at ultra lamina which takes advantage of the ability laminate a synthetic (similar to wiggys) rather than sewn through which should make it better in theory. Granted you don't need to sew most synthetics but IMO they benefit from some additional structure from longevity

I'll echo what has already been said about the MH ultra lamina. I've used their 32° version for quite a few years now and have been very happy with it. It packs down super small, and weighs right around 28 oz. another plus is that they're very reasonably priced. For my colder weather camping I use an EE 10° down quilt.
Here's a picture to give you an idea of how big the MH is in its compression bag.

I've been impressed with montbell synthetic bags. Really with anything montbell. I also really like my EE 20 deg quilt. For cold weather I use a 5 deg down western mountaineering and don't think their quality can be beaten.

Have to say that I'm a fan of Wiggy's gear, (it does what it says on the tin!) although I understand he can personally be a bit "abrupt"! Be interesting to see if he agrees that the MH lamina stuff is "similar" to his "laminate" - I'm guessing not!

At least he appears to be the only sleeping bag manufacturer to guarantee his kit and lofting for life, and recommends washing it regularly. Until another manufacturer does that I'll remain sceptical about their products.

Thanks for the insight all. I've been reading up on the lamina. Thanks for the photos as well. Really helps with the perspective

Well he ,wiggy , says lamolite / climashield. I suspect the ultra lamina is CS as well , although the filament thickness may be different. I suspect a thicker fiber will hold up better over the long run. However , this is all speculation on my part as I have not spent a lot of time researching. In my limited experience with CS I would think that while you can non bond it , or quilt it a bit , it is best if laminated to a shell as IMO and speculation it adds another layer of stability
