Quilts?

Postby SideStitch » Fri Jun 14, 2013 5:00 am

I've got a good cold weather sleeping bag but have thought about adding a quilt for warmer season backpacking. Anyone have any experience?

Yes I use them almost exclusively. I use the draft dodger 20 degree. In colder temps a lightly insulated bivy comes along as well

it's not exactly the same, but for summer weather, I normally just unzip a light sleeping bag flat and use it "like" a quilt.

I, too, as of late, have been thinking long and hard about quilts. Mainly for use in a hammock, but also for use on the ground. From what I've learned so far it seems to me they are lighter and more comfortable than a bag. Experimenting with my Kifaru bag unzipped and used quilt style it definitely does seem more comfortable. I am interested in what others have to say regarding quilt size, temp ratings, synthetic vs down etc.
Good topic, SideStitch!

I have an ee rev x 20 and don't see going back to a sleeping bag ever.

I have an EE 10° down quilt that I've been using quite a bit lately and really like it. I don't think it's going to make my warm weather lightweight sleeping bags obsolete though.

I have a homemade quilt that I had my mom help me sew together. It was a challenge, but turned out awesome!!!
I used it most of the year this year and I slept much more comfortable. I'm sure I might catch some flack on a forum like this, but I loathe "mummy bags"....... Lighter weight, more comfort---- I'm fine tuning my camping setup!!!

Oldjake, Greeting, glad you are on forum. You wouldn't have a picture of your home made quilt that you could post?

Hey all,

I just pulled the trigger on an EE quilt with this link: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/enlight...velation-quilt

It's a cool concept where you join a group that places orders in bulk to drive down the cost, so you receive it at a discount, plus free shipping. I too was curious the try the quilt route, and had been looking at EE for a while... and well now this just made it actually happen. Saved quite a few bucks!

I like the EE quilts. Run a 40 degree over stuffed, one of the originals and like it a lot.
