My favorite tarp is the old seekoutside Breakaway tarp together with the optional vestibule. I always set it up as a single wall tent. Why, well in the Netherlands it's almost always very humid so setting it up this tarp in this way I don't need a bivac sac.

Only when the weather forcast gives a very dry nights I use it quite standard as a normal tarp without the vestibule. The backend of the tarp close to the ground, sides open and the opening high enough to sit comfortable under it.

This is not a tarp but a C-9 chute makes a great set up.

The last couple years I've been using a HMG Ultimid 2 and I'm really liking it. It's probably not really classified as a tarp, as far as traditional tarps go. I like that it's super lightweight, easy to set up, and does well in windy environments. I don't have any experience with traditional flat tarp spike camping, but I'm seriously considering purchasing something in cuben and playing around with it a little.
