What does your fire kit consist of ?

Mine is pretty simple
- a lighter
- a fire knife

- some cotton balls with Vaseline
- a wet fire cube

- sometimes a packet of insta-fire (burns very
hot)

I've tried fire paste and emergency tinders from Coglan's (spelling?) and can tell you hands down the emergency tinders are AWESOME. Long, sustained fire perfect for starting damp wood. I like to have a bic and a long handle lighter for the stove.

We cut up corrugated cardboard and submerge it in wax, makes a great fire starter. My Dad makes really small pieces but I like 'em 3"x4" so I can tear them easily with cold hands.

I also take advantage of free matchbooks whenever possible; I dip them in wax too and just treat it like a single, hot-burning fire starter for wet wood.

We never have cotton balls around the house so I usually dip dryer lint in vaseline, wrap it in newspaper and wax the whole packet. That way you can unwrap it later and the waxed paper is a nice water-resistant platform for your "candle." A cottonball-sized bit of greased dryer lint will burn for 15 min.

That Glad press and seal stuff, it's like heavy duty saran wrap, works really well to protect your lighter flint from water.

Anyone else have a bear of a time finding good ole Blue tip strike anywhere matches? We have a small stash squirreled away but I'm reluctant to use them since I never find them in stores.

I like different methods of fire starting.

Here's the kit I'm using now:

ESEE fire striker/bowdrill divot. Striking a piece of flint and char cloth:

Used it to fire up my titanium Emberlit stove, then using my V3 Pocket Bellows to stoke her up:

And older kit, alongside my Blind Horse Knives Scatty Crafter:

I also like to use my fire pistons:

I try to keep my kit as simple as possible since all of my excursions are backpacking. I keep dryer lint, waterproof matches and a lighter. Usually a compressed fire starter if it's going to be really wet.
