Fire Starting Skills

a couple years ago we were sponsoring monthly camping, where people would come, and brush up on some basic bush skills, and the number one requirement was that no lighters or matches could be used to start any fires (which kept the coffee drinkers busy), and I was surprised at how enjoyable everyone found it.

By the second camp everyone had mastered using their fire steels, and had been busy at home building DIY fire pucks, but the most popular and most used system was still the Vaseline and cotton balls, because it was about the fastest way to start a first with a fire steel.

Plus because I'm also a full time product tester, and marketer, I was able to test out some unique tests, as well as test some new products such as the fire pucks, which was basically a super sized match head, and that even started fires in the rain without any problems.

By the end of the camping season, and being able to go camping each month, everyone became a fire starting experts, plus everyone felt great that they could start a fire really easy.

Sounds like an awesome opportunity. Any chance the weekend events would return?

I was a boy scoutmaster in Washington; All our boy could start a fire on the wet side,.. if a dad came along they were asked to start the fire,.. boys always ened up showing dads how it was done.

Great skill to keep up on - I'm lazy so just use the zippo almost always.

I have been doing wilderness trips since I was 16. Now 61. I used to rely on strike anywhere matches. They may say that on the box still but don't you believe it. Now I carry a zippo. I have a survival pack with a big & some commercial starter strips but have never had to use ether.
