Between Christmas and new years even I go to the German Harz, hills around the 1.000 metres and probably some feet of snow as well. Planning to take the breakout tarp with annex and little stove since I'm going solo. Might take the 6 man with stove if I can share the load. Of course I go snowshoeing, each night a different camp site:D

I'd love to see a report Zuma. I'm trying to find a nice 3 to 5 day winter route near tree line with minimal avalanche danger. The last part, is the most challenging. I've done a few, but would like to find something new. I might out some time into looking at the normal hut routes

Sorry guys, didn't got to toy in the snow in the Harz. My wife went with me, no snow and I have a knee problem due to an accident. So I took the big polycotton tipi with large steel woodstove put it on a single spot. Had some relaxed days and well we had 1 day actually some snow. Higher up the snow stayed and we made a day hike.

Sorry to hear about the knee problem. I went in to the Grand Canyon, not really as a winter trip but camping on the rim in 18 F felt sort of wintery.
I have a plan for an epic winter trip, I just need to get the details ironed out and find someone to ride along.

Zuma, I think we'd all be interested to see some pictures from your trips. We don't get much exposure to the wilderness where you are so its very interesting to us. Feel free to post any pics you want.
Ktimm, from what you've told me you need someone with strong legs and a weak mind to tag along on this trip you've schemed up...

Well I haven't yet much pics online of our trip in the Harz. But I have this one online. It showed the conditions of our day trip in the snow: Looks worse than it actually was. temp were just below freezing (hence the ice on the steps), worse was the relentless wind on this little summit.

Did an overnight winter trip to the Sylvania Wilderness in MI Upper Penninsula. Used a Ti stove and hot tented. Caught fish and was very comfortable at night, too.
