Gatekeeper retrofit questions

I'm looking at the new Merlin pack and see it needs gatekeepers to use as a compression panel or piggyback.
I'm interested to have that option with the Merlin on my older Unaweep pack with the fastex type buckles, and still be able to use the orange base talon I currently have.
So how many gatekeepers will I need? Do I just cut the fastex hardware off the orange base talon?
Thanks, Shane

Yes just cut the QR buckles off .. it's a mild pain. Thread gatekeepers in all the locations on the unaweep and the you are set . I've retrofitted a couple packs already ( an old precipice ). They work pretty much as well as a QR but allow more options for relocating without buckle halves dangling .

Plus the daypack is much nicer without all the buckles when used as a day pack

Received a Merlin day pack, and set of gatekeepers today.
I retrofitted the gatekeepers on to my older Unaweep 4800, and cut the fastex buckles off the older orange talon. Very straightforward. Everything fits up nicely.
The only thing I see that looks like it is lost is the ability to compress the 4800 pack without having a talon on there. The old fastex buckles could be used with or without a talon. Not a huge deal, the talon is always a nice for quick-access stuff anyway.

You can actually clip one GK on webbing behind the other GK to compress sans talon. It's a little harder but not much

Thanks!
I figured there was probably a simple solution that I just wasn't seeing.
