Which Fabric

Been kicking the tires for too long and need to get an order in, but I can't decide which fabric I should get.

I've decided on an Evo with 3900 bag, multi-lid and day talon (no harness). I have yet to do a long backpack hunt, in general it is mostly day hunting with an occasional overnight. I figure this set up gives me great day capacity with the talon and lid and the ability to use the load shelf if I need more room.

My hunting consists of brutal California heat near the coast with many pokey things, the High Sierra, Southwestern Montana, and the overgrown jungles of Northern Idaho.

My thought is to go with VX21. I don't think I need the ultra rugged durability of the 42 or 51, but with the wet option in Idaho and who knows what else down the road the three layer fabric should come in handy.

What are your thoughts? What am I not considering that might be a good idea? Thanks in advance.

They all are waterproof forever the difference is the 3 layer has a layer that protects the waterproof layer from interior abrasion ( think backpacking stove rubbing ) . Personally I prefer the two layer fabrics with a heavier face. If rock abrasion / rope hauls are a concern , go with x33 ,x42 ,x51 otherwise choose what is pleasant color wise. I personally like the gray colors the best , but all of them are fine for me.

Thanks Kevin, maybe since my interior components are less likes to cause issue with the 3rd layer since I most day hunt I should look to a tougher exterior as that is the variable that is a bigger unknown.

I can always work to protect the interior if there is an item that could be an issue, but if I'm in country that's rough, rocky and or sharp little can be done to protect the pack other than a tougher fabric.

Good observation and solid thought process . I have only had problems with VX21 on rope hauls but it has happened and protecting the inside is much easier than the outside

Where I am at I have less external abrasion and felt like I needed to minimize internal abrasion for the long term need. You can't really go wrong. By the time you wear out a bag you won't mind getting another pack bag.
