Base Talon Hydration

Postby ktimm » Fri Apr 18, 2014 8:02 am

A new Base Talon is available, called base talon hydration. It has a mesh hydration compartment on the back, and a center top female buckle for over the top straps. Other than that, it is the same as out standard Base Talon. Available in two colors (Gray VX21 and Black VX42). The Black VX42 is pretty heavy duty , and in many tests performs better with abrasion than Cordura.

Wow, you guys sure respond quickly to requests and suggestions. Just wondering, I ordered a unaweep with base talon combo a couple weeks back (when it was a offerred as a $399 combo for 4800). Any way to change from the base talon to the hydration talon (and pay whatever the difference is)?

The hydration adds about one ounce so right about 6. VX 42 will add about 3/4 ounce. The lightest base talon I have seen is a cuben one at 3.7 using the 2.9 ounce cuben.

Is multi-cam not a color option on the base talon hydration??

Might it be available through a custom order/extra charge?

Are there any pictures showing the Base Talon Hydration in action? I also have a Unaweep on order with the standard Base Talon. I would like to have the water bladder outside of the pack and was thinking the top lid might be a good place to stash it. This sounds like it could possibly be a better solution but I would like to see it in action if possible. A couple of concerns I would have is whether the compression would interfere with the volume of the bladder. I guess you would fill it while the Talon is loose and compress it once the bladder is full? Also, how does the tube routing work? Would the tube from the bladder get in the way of accessing the pack? Lastly, is carrying 3 liters water on the back of the pack the best place to carry? It seems most other solutions have the water close to your back - either between the frame and the pack or inside the pack.

Thanks

I don't think tube routing would be an issue. I know Nathan has used the same method on the day talon a lot when it is used as a compression panel. I'll wait for him to chime in.

carrying water that far from your back is into the most ideal way to do it. You want the heavier items closer to your back, and water is one of the heaviest a person carries depending on the amount. In my opinion the water pouch in the talon is more for if you are using it as a day pack or when being used by itself as a bag on a frame when it will be close to your back.

I don't have a photo handy of using the hydration pocket for a bladder. The hose is simple to use, just run it out the to
P of the talon and then on either side of the packbag, under a load lifter, then tuck under the sternum strap.
