Unaweep 4800 and the Bearikade Expedition

Postby Mocs123 » Mon May 04, 2015 11:11 am

Is there anyone out there that has an Unaweep 4800 and a Bearikade Expedition (9"x14.5") that can verify that it fits horizontally? I am doing a two week backpacking trip in Alaska this summer and my normal pack will only carry it vertically which I really don't care for. I really want to carry it horizontally in the bottom of the pack. I know it's a big canister so I may be out of luck.

The website reads like it might be able to but I want to make sure.
"The 4800 will accept all bear cans up to the Bearicade Expedition (9" X 14.5") either vertically or horizontally. The 3900 will accept up to the Bear Vault BV500 (8.7" X 12.7") vertically or horizontally, but it is tight horizontally."

Thanks

OK, after crunching the numbers, the Bearikade Expedition will not fit horizontally in the Unaweep 4800. The Bearikade Weekender and BearVault 500 will though.

Will the Beariakdes 9" diameter fit in the bottom of the Unaweep 4800 or 3900? I like to put my bear can in first and pack everything else around it and on top of it. I know some packs will only allow the can in the top 2/3 of the pack.

We have a BearVault BV500 here in the shop, it will fit in the bottom of a 4800 quite well. today I built it up to 14.5" with foam and masking tape to compare it to a Bearikade Expedition. It almost fit but at a slightly smaller diameter so it is pretty safe to say that the Expedition will not fit horizontally.

as for the 3900, it is all but impossible to turn the BV500 sideways.
